Preparing for is something every single parent should do. Whether it be in providing your child with a fully paid tuition or if it is simply giving them all the help that they need to get the grades that they have to have to get in, all parents are preparing their child for from the beginning. What should you be doing how should you do it? Here are a few tips to help you to learn just what you need to know.

Tip One: Preparing for often means preparing financially. If the kids are young, consider investing in tuition plans. Some states can provide these for you or financial firms can. If the kids are older, help them to get the scholarships that are out there help them to find the financial aid that they or you need. While you may be willing to take out a home equity loan for their , it may be smarter to look towards other options instead.

Tip Two: Preparing for academically. Often, parents start with this preparation at a very young age. What is important, though, is not just allowing them to soak up the information in text books, but to show them allow them to experience life. Take them to museums, musicals other intellectual aspects. Provide for them the study plan the work environment that they need to get good grades. Put rules rewards in place for good behavior, good grades success. And, make sure to get them the help that they need if they are struggling.

Tip Three: Preparing for also means emotional preparation. While it is not hard to realize that your baby is growing up, youll need to prepare them for the real world by allowing them to make mistakes helping them to learn from them. It is also important for them to develop social skills too. They need to be challenged encouraged in a positive manner to succeed.

All of this is up to mom dad to provide. Preparing for didnt seem to be all that hard when you went, did it?

The Children of China Part 2 of 2

One reason that so much emphasis and focus was given to the childrens schooling was the one child policy. In 1979, China adopted this one child policy in which to try and consolidate their population (Carnell, 2000). Couples that agreed to adopt this policy had to sign an agreement with the country and in return their family would receive multiple benefits from the government (Carnell). Therefore, since families were only allowed to have one child, all of the parents and extended familys attention was put on the one child. While some people believed in the new policy, overall it was strongly resisted by the Chinese people. However, the one child policy did appear to give rise to what some countries termed the over 500,000 missing girls in China (Carnell). The thought is that many couples just simply did not report the birth of girls in their homes. Adoptions from China rose during the height of the one child policy. Before the policy was in place, adoptions averaged fewer than 200,000, compared to close to 400,000 during the policy popularity (Carnell). It is believed that adoptions rose because the ratio of boys to girls showed 27 to 36 boys per 100 girls among adoptions (Carnell). Chinese couples have always been more likely to give their daughters away, but the practice heightened during the one child policy.

A major issue that China faces today is that of human trafficking, especially in children. Thousands of children are given into or tricked into trafficking each year. Money is the big selling point for many children that are tricked into it. Poor children are often roped into trafficking because they believe that they will be able to get money for their families. Children involved in trafficking can have a number of different jobs ranging from collecting trash for recycling all the way to prostitution (Radio Free Asia [RFA, 2000). Overseas agencies have identified China as a significant center for human-trafficking, both within its borders and internationally (RFA). The different reports being done on human-trafficking in China is gaining interest and has already helped start a cross-disciplinary initiative at the rescue center in Xinjiang, China (RFA). Hopefully, the more attention this issues gets the chances will increase in the likelihood of it getting solved.

The children of China are faced with more obstacles than most people realize. In a country that is of substantial size, it is difficult to grasp that the children have fallen between the cracks in so many areas and still suffer great difficulties in this modern age.

The Children of China Part 1 of 2

China is one of the fastest developing countries in the world. It boasts a population of over 1.3 billion, and twenty one percent within that number are children (Central Intelligence Agency [CIA, 2006). They witness disease, death, poverty, and much more on a daily basis. With such a large percentage of the children in the world coming from China, people need to take the time to learn about their education, health care, family life, and other culture issues they face on a daily basis.

The health care involving the children in China continues to improve with each year. The annual number of births in 2004 was 17,372 and the number of children under the age of five that died was 539 in 2004 (United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund [UNICEF, 2006). While child mortality rates in developed coastal areas approach those of industrialized countries, in most Western provinces they are 3-5 times higher (UNICEF). Pneumonia, asphyxia, premature birth, and low birth weight are cited as the main causes of neonatal deaths in China (UNICEF). The main cause of death in children ages one to fourteen is injury (UNICEF). One of the positive additions to the lower number of child deaths is the increase in the number of women that are choosing to breastfeed their babies. Breastfeeding goes hand in hand with the nutritional status of the children in China. The nutrition of the children has greatly improved with more mothers now breastfeeding and with supplementary food being introduced. Overall, today it is extremely rare to come across large cases of malnutrition.

A childs education is a very important aspect of the Chinese culture. Since the early 20th century, mathematics and natural sciences have been considered to be the most prestigious academic subjects (Tsui, 2005). Because of the emphasis put on school, children are instilled with the drive to study and work hard. Parents encourage children to work hard by bragging and expressing their anxiety about their childrens school rank to neighbors and colleagues, often in front of their children (Tsui). In most Chinese cities, the students examination grades are put in order from best to worst and made known to everyone (Tsui). The ranking system puts a lot of pressure on students to excel in their classes in order to earn a higher ranking with the next exam. The teachers use public correction and criticism as a means of correcting a child in the classroom (Vaughan, 1993). Teachers believe that using these methods will help the child work harder so as to avoid future mistakes (Vaughan). The public reprimand is often referred to as a loss of face. The importance of face has a long history in Chinese cultureit is a reflection upon the whole family (Vaughan). If the child performed poorly, then it was seen as the responsibility of the parents or other family members that the child lived with at the time.

College Essay Preparation

Submitting a good college essay is another aspect that has to be considered by the high school student who wishes to attend a competitive school. This essay, together with the SAT (see my article on SAT Test Preparation), are two key aspects that must be satisfactorily completed by the college-bound student. Sometimes the college essay is what makes or breaks a students chances of getting into the school of his or her choice.

The college essay gives the admissions board a chance to sneak a peek inside the head of the prospective enrollee. Given comparable grades and other good qualities, the student with the better essaythe one which is coherent, well thought out, and captivatingwill almost certainly get the nod. Why so? Because the ability to write a good essay shows the admissions board that these students have a number of desirable qualities: that they can communicate effectively in written form; that they can express their thoughts clearly and capture an audience; and that they can infuse their personalities into a written vehicle which becomes an extension of themselves.

Most people know that writing is not an easy thing to do. Most high school studentsindeed most college graduateswould be hard-pressed to write an effective essay on whatever topic. For this reason, students who can generate a well written original college essay will certainly stand out amongst their peers. Writing such an essay, however, is not such an easy task. Even students who have good writing skills would be well served to have some expert assistance. This assistance can be the difference between a ho-hum essay, and a home run.

Someone skilled in college essay preparation can spot banal areas inside the body of the students writing, injecting life and color where only gray shades of hazy color abide. Moreover, an appropriate essay mentor will be able to spot and correct faulty non sequiturs, thus smoothing out the overall texture of the essay so that the reader is segued down a winding, colorful valley of enticing scents and sights. This accomplished, the essay is sure to get notice. And why not? The admissions board will certainly see few that fit such stringent criteria of good expressive writing.

Keep such thoughts in mind as your son or daughter engages this terrain. Remember. Given two students of seemingly equal caliber, the essay can make or break the camels back of college admission. See here for more information on this topic and my philosophy regarding the college essay College Essay Preparation.

SAT Test Preparation

For many juniors in high school, the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) looms as a big ugly monster on the horizon. Indeed for both parents and students, the anticipation of taking this test creates all kinds of unwelcome anxiety. The stress becomes enhanced for the competitive college-bound individual who wants to get into a better-than-average school. In order to achieve a respectable score on the SAT and to ward off excessive amounts of stress, students should give adequate time to prepare for this examination. For those parents who can afford it, private tutoring and specialized schools are also available.

Most parents prefer one-on-one private tutoring to an SAT school. Parents, whose children I have tutored for this test, have told me that they opted for a private tutor after having enrolled their child in a program at school and got minimal results. Certainly some help is better than none, and this would apply to that help gained at a school or specialized preparation center. The problem with the school or group approach is that many students tune out while enrolled and therefore do not experience the gains that one-on-one help can provide. In a one-on-one situation, the student has no choice but to interact with the tutor, whereas in the group environment a student can often get lost in the shuffle. Such factors as non-participation, inattentiveness, and lack of interest will certainly mitigate against any gains in score. Of course, in the one-on-one situation, the competence of the tutor plays a significant role as well.

In my years of tutoring privately for the SAT, (go here for more information SAT Test Preparation) I have found that putting the student in the test situation and then reviewing what they failed at is most effective. In other words, I let them take an actual math section test, under the same time constraints as the actual SAT, and then I go over it point by point. Then I request that they retake the entire test after reviewing my notes and worked-out solutions. After doing this repeatedly, their ability to get through the problems successfully increases dramatically. Bear in mind that while I show them the step-by-step solutions, I also fill in their weak spots by re-teaching them material they need to know. By providing this type of tutoring, the students test scores invariably go up; and both they and their parents are always pleased with this accomplishment.
